La Petite France
The most picturesque district of Strasbourg
It's impossible to come to Strasbourg without taking a stroll in Petite France, the most picturesque and best preserved district of old Strasbourg, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Fishermen, millers and tanners used to live and work in this built-up neighborhood.
For centuries, rue du Bain-aux-Plantes has been the district of the tanners' corporation. It is lined with old houses of the Alsatian Renaissance (16th and 17th) with corbels, half-timbered, galleries and gables. Their sloping roofs were open on attics where once the skins were drying.
From the quays along the navigation channels, visitors enjoy a romantic panorama on the facades of the old fishermen's houses, tanners and millers, which are reflected in the water. You will enjoy even more light games on half-timbered houses by embarking for a mini-cruise on the Ill, from the pier of the Palais Rohan. At nightfall, the magic is total!
